COMPARISON AND CONTRACT ESSAY

The Fall of the House of Usher & A Rose for Emily
Comparison and Contract Essay

In this essay I will be comparing the two short stories discuss in class. The first story is called "The Fall of the House of User", this is about a man that buries is sister alive and after some days realizes what he has done. He's sister got out of her grave and appears in front of him, he dies of fear. The second story is called "A Rose for Emily".  It's about a women who kills her lover and sleeps nest to his corpse. After some time she dies and the smell of theirs corpse attract people and they find them.

The first thing that I found that was similar in the two stories was their houses. Both houses had a symbolism of the demise of both families. In Emily's house we can see the decay of the family, like the father's death. In Usher's house we can see that there is a downfall or decay because of the family, they are the last descendants of their family. We can also see the way that both stories are told in first person. A Rose for Emily is told from the point of view of the townspeople it uses the pronouns WE and US. In The Fall of the House of Usher the author uses the pronouns I and My sense is told from the point of view of the friend. Both stories are putting the readers in the same perspective as the townspeople and the friend.

Another similarity that I found was the relationship that the main characters had with their family members that disconnected them from the real world. For example Emily and Toby, he brings the groceries in and out of the house so Emily didn't have to go outside for anything. Also Usher and his sister, they were the last descendants of their family in the integer world so they spent all their time together. But for me the most important similarity that I could find was the power of the dead over the living in both stories. In Emily's case her lover had her obsessed with him, even when he was just a routing corpse. In Usher's case he thought that his sister was dead, but when he started hearing noises he was too afraid of the meaning of what that was that it drives him crazy. In conclusion by comparing these stories with each other we can see that there are some similarities between them. But the main idea and the purpose of the story is still different and unique within them.
